Photogravure Workshops at Prints on Paper offer immersive and practical instruction, encompassing both fundamental and advanced techniques. These workshops utilize state-of-the-art plates to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the photogravure process.

Photogravure Four Day Workshop ($450 deposit, $1800 total)
$450.00

$450 booking fee. Remainder due one month before workshop date.

During this four-day intensive photogravure workshop, we delve deep into the intricacies of this unique medium. Participants begin with a set of ten pre-made plates and immediately start experimenting with various gravure printmaking techniques on the first day. As the workshop progresses, attendees get the opportunity to create a second batch of plates, reacting to their already-printed images. This hands-on experience helps establish best practices for imaging low-contrast mediums like gravure.

The workshop covers a range of complex techniques, including multi-plate printing, Chiné-Colle, À la poupée, and various papers. Attendees gain a broader understanding of the medium and learn from a professional studio. As a print-focused workshop, the goal is to leave with a substantial number of prints. While it’s not a comprehensive guide to building a plate-printing studio, it provides a solid foundation in traditional printmaking techniques applied to our digital gravure plates created at Prints on Paper. Additionally, participants learn essential Photoshop skills for working with low-contrast mediums. The techniques and knowledge gained during the workshop empower participants to thrive in their art practice.

  • We’ll print whatever fits a 31×42 master plate, as long as each plate is smaller than 16×20. For instance, you can print about 16 6×9 inch plates. We also have discounted plate material for in-studio plate printing if you want this workshop to focus on plate production and proofing.

  • Right now, we’re using the workshop revenue to finish building the studio. Unfortunately, we can’t issue refunds at this time. But if you’ve booked a workshop, you can always move it to a different date or use it for custom plate production. Let us know if you have any questions!

  • You do not need any prior experience to take this workshop!

  • Four guest rooms available (The Red House), $175/night including cleaning fee and lunch ingredients in fridge. Camping available for $15/night.

  • Bring a hard-drive with digital files on it (photographs, vector, scans you name it). Bring original work if you want it scanned to work on. Bring a laptop and any monitor adapters you have. :)

Platemaking & Printmaking Studio Setup/Consultations

We offer photogravure and digital setup services for community studios, university/college studios, and occasionally for commercial print publishers or artists who want to utilize advanced platemaking directly. The purpose of these setups is to design a workflow for your studio. Our staff can create, train and implement a custom setup for photogravure, digital negative and inkjet on alternative media types. We do this work remotely and in person. Our setups are designed to work with equipment already in house requiring no new large equipment purchases and often we can engineer a platemaking solution on-the-fly for whatever printing equipment is present. If there is a critical piece of equipment missing before the setup, we’ll address that ahead of time in the initial conversation. These trainings can begin with a consultation to evaluate your particular needs and Prints on Paper staff can tailor a set-up that includes a defined workflow with staff training. Our staff is flexible and can create these specific workflows either on-site or remotely.

To schedule an initial free consultation around your studio setup needs, please fill out the form below and we’ll be in touch!
