Photogravure is an art medium in its own right. Working in this medium through a direct-to-plate workflow empowers artists to apply a diverse range of marks to a continuous tone plate. From photographic to hand-drawn marks, this medium offers boundless possibilities in terms of rendering a wide spectrum of tonalities during the etching process. Prints on Paper Studio’s staff is dedicated to advancing and expanding this medium, enabling it to realize any artist’s creative vision.
Our gravure plates can be printed on a wide variety of paper and artificial materials. This medium’s ability to render distinct tonalities surpasses other photographic-process mediums. We are receptive to various experimental projects, including multiple-plates or hand coloring.
Contract Photogravure Print Pricing
We strive to balance the cost of collaborative printmaking, which can produce numerous necessary proofs, with the overhead of running a business. To achieve this, during in-studio work with an artist, state proofs, press proofs, printer’s proofs, and BATs are priced solely based on the material fee (ink and paper, etc.) plus a labor charge of $142 per hour, which applies from the start of the work until its completion. These prints are typically not curated, except for the printer’s proofs and BATs.
Artist proofs and edition (final) prints are priced lower and reflect the labor charge.

Editioning

There is a very high level of follow-through from the first conversation with an artist to the final signed print.

Our pre-made photogravure plates are of the highest available quality. We can custom print any type of image. We are constantly innovating our process to give clients the highest resolution image on their plate. While best practices exist when it comes to image-making for photogravure plates, in general working with a direct-to-plate workflow ensures that all the tonalities you see on your screen are what you can expert in your final etching print.
